CHAPTER TWELVE

Shaye woke before Nathan the next morning. She crept out of bed thinking she made it out without waking him, but she realized that was impossible with a shifter.

"It's too fucking early, woman." The pillow muffled his groan.

"I know it is, but I'm up this early every morning. Out of necessity, I swear." Shaye disappeared into her bathroom to shower and get ready for work.

She wasn't sure what to make of the previous night. Mostly, her friends had been on their best behaviour. They disapproved of her going back to the lake without telling them, and they disapproved of Nathan. Even Jenna, although she tried hard not to show it. Hopefully, they would all come around with time.

Then there was Nathan. He'd been distracted, not that he hadn't been contributing much to the conversation, and no one had attempted to include him either. But Shaye often found him focusing elsewhere in the room, and toward the pictures she had of her dad. He saw something in one of them. Something that caused a big enough reaction he broke the frame in his hand. It was still together and leaning against the wall, but it was lopsided. She needed to talk to him about it this morning.

She finished in her shower and dried off, then used the towel to wrap around her hair. She stepped out and straight to her closet.

"Mmm," Nathan hummed in appreciation, which had been her intention when she walked out of the bathroom naked. She sent a sassy smile over her shoulder. He'd propped himself on one elbow, his eyes raking over her body, only briefly meeting her face. If she didn't hurry and get dressed, she would be late for work.

She pulled out a pencil skirt and a loose blouse and set them on the bed. His eyes heated her skin. Shaye picked up her pace. Pulling out underwear from her drawer, she put them on then grabbed a bra. When she turned around to get dressed. He smirked. Her reaction was clear as day to him.

"You're cute when you're flustered."

"I'm thinking you did that on purpose." She put on her blouse and started on the buttons.

"As did you." The corners of his eyes crinkled. He climbed off the bed. Shaye couldn't stop herself from taking the time for her own perusal of his perfect body. He lifted her chin and devoured her with a single kiss. Then he turned around so she had a view of his perfect ass as he walked into the bathroom.

Shaye sighed. Her body heated further, and she didn't have time for this. She finished dressing and took the towel from her hair. She followed him into the bathroom to blow dry it. She bent over and flipped her hair upside down to dry it quicker. When she flipped it back and stood, Nathan stood in front of her, water droplets running down his skin and a towel hung low on his hips.

Shaye wanted to lick each drop of water from his skin.
